Music to go with Bernat’s broken glasses: Break, broke, broken

Bernat really knows how to make your imagination take off!

Well here comes some music that fits with the topic of your Catalan assignment, I could have chosen others but I decided to pick this one “walking on broken glass” because,  as in Bernat’s composition, in this song there are windows, and broken glasses, and broken hearts too.

The chorus of this song by Annie Lennox is quite catchy and easy to sing. It was a hit in the 90’s and, I’m sure it will help you remember the past participle of the verb  to break. BREAK, BROKE, BROKEN

Music helps, doesn’t it? Everyone  in 1st ESO E knows “gone” is the past particple of the verb go, thanks to Black Eyed Peas. Go, went, gone

Annie Lennox, received in 2009 the “ WOMEN OF THE YEAR PEACE AWARD” for raising awareness of the impact of HIV and AIDS on women and children, especially in South Africa. She was very popular in the 80’s and 90’s. Now she keeps on singing and supporting humanitarian actions with her songs.  You can visit her “sing” campaing site here: http://www.annielennoxsing.com/

Listen to the music and fill in the gaps in the son to get the lyrics.  This you tube video uses some clips from a film version  of Romeo and Juliet.

I tenia raó.

  9. Why Is Mt Hood called that way?

Now that you’ve made your brain work a bit, I’ll leave you with some images.

November 23rd, 2007, Was it Molly, the one who filmed Mt Hood from the plane? We have to ask her next week.

This is beautiful Mt Hood from the air

This is a plane taking off, not landing, but it is also very cold and it is  Oregon too..

Now, no more flying, let’s go down to earth

We’ll follow a girl on a trail to Mt Hood, until… at the end there’s a reward, Huckleberry Milkshakes and beautiful Oregon wildflowers.

10. What are huckleberries? What do they taste like? bitter? sweet? sour? 11. And milk shakes? Is this girl holding a milkshake?

12. Finally, you know what?  I bet Mt Hood has something to do with volcanos,  let your volcano personality take over, go to Wikepedia and check: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Hood Was I right?

13. What is the time Zone in Oregon? are they ahead or behind us?

14. send a comment of these videos to the blog and add the Oregon time in your comment.

Students from the US talk about their science blog

There are student bloggers all over the world. Some, as these from http://missbakersbiologyclass.com/ Ms Baker’s Biology class, are really proud of their blog. Listen to them.

Maybe we could send them a mail, their site is really good and they seem really enthusiastic. Are you as proud of Castígate and Castígate 2 as they are?

Homework: for Monday

1. Write two good things the students say about the blog

2. There is a boy who uses a metaphor, he says before he started blogging in Mrs Baker’s blog he was a fish in a tiny fish bowl.  What changed after Mrs Baker started her blog?  He was a fish in….

Can you explain the metaphor?

Science lessons. Volcanos (2)

Tomorrow we’ll have our session with Ivan, and I expect you to switch into your volcanic personality mode.

Your pronunciation with Molly’s help will be excellent, so be ready to impress us.

Lava, vent, epicenter, earthquake…

When we come into the room be ready to introduce yourself.

Some slides I found on slide share to help you remember who you are. You can always go back to the volcanic eruption song.

I would  have liked to tell you who the authors are of these excellent power point presentations, but I could not find their names.

Some hints to improve your oral presentation skills

Today we went to the Computer room to  use the projector and listen to your  power point presentations of  the city outing. Only two groups managed to meet the deadline and finish the work. I know that some people had technical problems and other people were ill but next time you must organize your groups more effectively. Two groups did the presentation today, it was a good job but there are some things that can be improved. We learn from errors, don’t we?  here follow some hints:

Regarding the slides:

  • Check spelling. If you work in groups, a person can type and the others check that there are no spelling mistakes. The questions were in the dossier, so there is no excuse for making so many errors.
  • Follow the instructions. If the instructions say ” write a caption” , the task is not completed if you do not write a caption.
  • Do not copy things you do not understand.

Regarding the oral presentation:

  1. Introduce the topic and the group  to the audience.
  2. Keep eye contact
  3. A power point is a visual help to make what you want to say clearer to the audience, use it as a visual aid not as a book.
  4. A power point is not something you just “read”. Do not read all the time. There is no point in presenting a power point to an audience if you only read what is written in the slides.
  5. Be natural
  6. Make spontaneous comments. (it was a nice day! Look at that, Can you see…?, please, can we see the next slide?)
  7. Ask questions to the audience. ( do you understand? shall I repeat? is it clear? or any other questions that make your presentation more interactive)
  8. Practice pronunciation
  9. Use body language and point with your hands, cursor or pointer to the area or aspect of the slide you are commenting
  10. The way you present the information is as important as the slides
  11. You work in group, so every member must collaborate and pay attention to what is going on.
  12. Thank the audience for their attention and ask for questions or suggestions

The groups that have not done the presentation yet have an advantage. They can practice. Have these 12 points  in front of you and rehearse the presentation. Check that you follow the instructions.

Congratulations to the people who did it first and good luck  to the rest of you.

POST 74  HOMEWORK: copy the hints for a good oral presentation in your notebook and keep these hints in mind while doing the presentation. Practice with your group before Friday.

Computer literacy: Most of you are about as old as Google, hadn’t you thought of it?

On the 24th of October there was a post on Computer literacy: Browsers, do you remember? Google was presented to you among some other search engines.

Google story is quite short, but fascinating.  In a very short time Google grew from just being a name to a business empire.

Search  this site:  http://www.google-logos.com/ where you can look at some official and non official Google logos. I’ve chosen these three.

Now it is you turn, which one would you choose?

Why don’t you think of a good logo for our blog?

Who knows maybe we’ll end up being as famous as Google in no time!

These last weeks we have been talking about how our city has changed throughout time. Some buildings in Palma, for instance,  date back long ago, don’t they?  Some of you were surprised to find out how old  or the  cathedral was. The construction of the cathedral of Palma took 10 generations of people to be completed.

Today we’ll look at how fast new technologies grow. Think of Google, it was born almost at the same time as you. If you look at it from that perspective, it is not such a big deal. You have also grown a lot, haven’t you?

Watch this you tube video and answer the questions

  1. When did Google become Top search engine for the first time?
  2. When was Google maps launched?
  3. What kind of applications from Google do you use?
  4. Will Google still exist 10 generations from now?

POST 73  HOMEWORK for Friday the 27th

Copy the answers to questions 1,2,4, in your notebook and post the answer to question 3 to the blog.

We’ll leave you time to work on the Castígate Logo, don’t worry!
