Computer literacy: Most of you are about as old as Google, hadn’t you thought of it?

On the 24th of October there was a post on Computer literacy: Browsers, do you remember? Google was presented to you among some other search engines.

Google story is quite short, but fascinating.  In a very short time Google grew from just being a name to a business empire.

Search  this site:  http://www.google-logos.com/ where you can look at some official and non official Google logos. I’ve chosen these three.



Now it is you turn, which one would you choose?

Why don’t you think of a good logo for our blog?

Who knows maybe we’ll end up being as famous as Google in no time!

These last weeks we have been talking about how our city has changed throughout time. Some buildings in Palma, for instance,  date back long ago, don’t they?  Some of you were surprised to find out how old  or the  cathedral was. The construction of the cathedral of Palma took 10 generations of people to be completed.

Today we’ll look at how fast new technologies grow. Think of Google, it was born almost at the same time as you. If you look at it from that perspective, it is not such a big deal. You have also grown a lot, haven’t you?

Watch this you tube video and answer the questions

  4. Will Google still exist 10 generations from now?

Use the Internet to do your homework: check before answering

I’m checking your answers to the skyscraper post and I notice that you just copy the answer of the person who posted it before you. When the answer is wrong, it shows that you did not do your homework carefully. Check the Internet when you do not know or when you are not sure. There is no excuse!   Type on Google  “Empire State”, click on images, and you will see that the  Empire State is not the skyscraper that appears in the blog.

I’ll give you a hint

the skyscraper that appears in the blog was the highest building in the world only for a year, then the Empire State was built. So, they are from the same period but the Empire State is a bit “younger”

Another hint:

I’m afraid you’ve missed it. This is not the Empire State!

SOME FACTS:

This mysterious building is an example of art-deco style and it has  77 stories and  is 1,048 ft (319 m) tall.

It is decorated with eagle heads, pineapples, and automobile-related designs.

At the top there is  a slim 185-ft (56-m) stainless spire.

TRENCACLOSQUES DE LEXEMES I MORFEMES

La façana i la proa són, respectivament, la part de davant d’un edifici i d’un vaixell. De la mateixa manera l’esquena és la part de darrere d’una persona i la reraguarda es refereix als soldats que van al final d’un exèrcit o d’un destacament.
Hi da locals públics que tenen dues portes: una d’entrada i una de sortida. Pot ser que siguin idèntiques, però una està situada davant i l’altra darrere.
El parabrisa és només el vidre de davant del cotxe. Els altres vidres no tenen aquest nom. El líder va al principi i el coer al final d’una classificació. A l’esport i a la vida quotidiana trobam altres casos en què és important anar davant o darrere.
De la mateixa manera els morfemes, si van davant el lexema, són prefixos, i si van darrere, sufixos. Així de senzill. No és qüestió gramatical, sinó de situació, de col•locació.
Ja hem estudiat la definició i sabem que lexema és la part d’una paraula que té significat ple, complet, absolut, important, fonamental. En canvi un morfema només aporta significació gramatical, secundària. Per exemple, el mot “NINETES”, té el lexema “NIN”, gràcies al qual sabem que parlam de persones joves que encara creixen. Els morfema “ET” indica diminutiu; “A” (transformat en una E per canvi ortogràfic), indica femení, i “S”, plural.
Convé practicar amb molts d’exemples. En posarem alguns:

Segur que heu separat els monemes i els heu classificat en lexemes, prefixos i sufixos. La separació és fàcil perquè ja ens han posat els mots amb guionets. Hehehe. Ara cal pensar bé quin és el significat més important. La semàntica no és una ciència exacta. [Què dimoni deu ser la semàntica?].
Parau esment perquè algunes vegades pot semblar que tenen significat fragments que només és pura casualitat. Per exemple, “escopetes” no és diminutiu, encara que acabi igual que “ninetes” que hem vist anteriorment. I tampoc té res a veure amb “copes petites” = “copetes”. En veurem altres casos.

DIAMANT: no es refereix a un “dia” ni a un “amant”, sinó que tot és un lexema procedent del grec “adamantos”, que significa “fort”.

CAPELL: no és un “ca” amb molta “pell”, sinó que el seu lexema és “cap”.

INVENT: no té el prefix negatiu “in”, com a “in-vis-ible”, ni posa l’aire en moviment.

COMPLET: no fa referència a un judici “com-plet”.

També heu d’anar vius perquè de vegades hi ha canvis ortogràfics, com per exemple: “taronja” i “tarong-er”, o “barca” i “barqu-er”.
Ara podeu jugar a fer el trencaclosques de combinar lexemes i morfemes de la llista superior, i d’altres paraules.
Per cert, quants de lexemes té “trencaclosques”? Té qualque morfema? Si dividim aquest mot en síl•labes, per pura casualitat, resultaran un grup de paraules: TREN- CA – CLOS – QUE – S.
També podeu cercar lexemes i, afegint morfemes, crear noves paraules derivades. Per exemple. “carn” o “llibre”. Carnisser i llibreria serien les primeres, però en podeu fer més. Venga, que vosaltres sou capaços d’això i de molt més. O no? A l’examen de dijous hi haurà una pregunta semblant tot això que acabam de llegir. Ja teniu dos punts.

Walls, poems and metaphors

Palma used to be a walled city, and we’ve also been talking a lot about walls. Today we are going to use walls to learn what a metaphor is.

Here follows a poem I found in a site that tries to help American students improve their writing. It does not say who the author is, but it fits the things we’ve been doing in class. http://rhlschool.com

Let’s look at walls from a different perspective. In this poem, walls are a metaphor of … let’s see if you  can discover it.

Maybe it is a bit difficult for you, but with the help of some images I’m sure you’ll grasp the meaning.
