2.en.7. Santa Catalina, Jovellanos and Gijón

This is not my first post from the north, in October I sent you some photos from Santander and the beautiful beach of El Sardinero at low tide. These photos are not from Santander but from Asturias. I took them on Chritsmas day in Gijon, my hometown. It does not look like Christmas because the sky is blue and it was a bright sunny day.

You all know that In Palma, there is a neighbourhood called Santa Catalina. Well, in Gijón, my hometown, my favourite place is also called “Cerro de Santa Catalina” which is a park situated at the tip of a peninsula where the old fishing neighbourhood used to be. From the top of that peninsula you can see the coastline, the old fishing port and the long sandy beach of San Lorenzo.

On the 25th , Christmas day, before having lunch with my family,  I went for a walk along the San Lorenzo beach, and then up the hill of Santa Catalina. From the top of the park you can get a nice view of the coastline. It is one of my favourite spots. At the very top, there is a huge concrete sculpture by Chillida, it is called “Elogio del Horizonte” “Praise of the Horizon”. There is a strange echo like effect produced by the sculpture and the roaring sound of the sea that surrounds you. If you stand under the two pillars, you can hear the sea as if it was passing over your head.

A few meters away there is a museum, it is the house where Jovellanos, was born. Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos (1744 – 1811) was a well known Spanish neoclassical statesman, author, philosopher and main figure of the Enlightenment in Spain.

Now, you must do a bit of research:

What is the relationship between Jovellanos and Palma de Mallorca?

Visit this web site and find out. http://www.jovellanos.net/

Enjoy your holidays and do your homework. So far, only a few have started their posts.

If you discover anything about Jovellanos and Mallorca, post your findings to the blog.

2.en.6. Theatre terms: prompter and props; apuntador, utilería, atrezo; apuntador, utilleria, attrezzo

It seems you are very enthusiastic about drama, so let’s learn some useful vocabulary for our next production. In our next dramatization, we have to decide who will be responsible for props and also who the prompter will be.

Prompter

Prompter

Theater. a person who is offstage and follows a play in progress from the book, repeating missed cues and supplying actors with forgotten lines.
an electronic or mechanical device for prompting a speaker or performer.

      Props

      • Props:
      • a usually movable item, other than costumes or scenery, used on the set of a theater production, motion picture, etc.; any object handled or used by an actor in a performance.

how do you say prompter and props in Catalan and Spanish?

In this page you can find a glossary of the most common theater  terms: http://library.thinkquest.org/5291/terms.html

Your 12 days of Christmas versions and contest results

Most of your works were very nice. However, as it usually happens, 5 people did not  hand in their work and many did not meet the deadlines. Some students sent their draft so late that the teacher had to correct them late at night. Some people did not even copy the corrections the teacher did. There were also students who did not follow the instructions about size, type of paper and presentation requirements, and one who did not even write his/her name . Well, hopefully next time you’ll be more reliable.

Congratulations for those who did a great job!

Jury: Bernat, Laura, Rodrigo, Diana and  Cristian.

      Homework:

Post your comments on the activity and on your classmates versions in the blog. We all learnt from each other, don’t we?

Pensau a dur calçat adequat i roba impermeable i d’abric.

The Love of the Three Oranges.

Thanks to Bernat’s skills as a story teller and getting inspiration from Majorcan popular stories, Rondalles, in English lessons we tried to  re-tell one of them  making a short sketch ” The love of the three oranges” . We only had one day to prepare it, but the result was great and we had fun, so we might  repeat it again in a more professional way. What do you think? I feel there are good actors and actresses in 1st Year ESO E and your ability to improvise and your imagination to adapt the story was also excellent. Finally, the most important thing was that group work and cooperation   functioned.

Thanks to Pep Toni’s journalist skills, we can have a look at the recording of part of the sketch. The narrators have lost their heads during the process, but it was just the first time we did it anyway!

Click Here to visit Pep Toni’s blog and watch the video.

1st ESO E English version of a traditional Rondalla “The love of the three oranges”

      Starring:

Lukas Berrocal as the brave rapper Prince.

      Lovepreet and Àngel as narrators

Miquel Angel as the powerful king

Claudia, Sara and Judit as the three pretty girls

      Xisco as the handsome doctor

Jose Luis as the orange tree

      Andrea as the old woman

      Tatiana as the evil servant

Rodrigo; Lorenç and Pep Toni as the three giants.

Prompts and  special effects : 1st ESO E

Soundtrack: The 12 days of Christmas. Score: Paquita Virseda.

Enthusiastic audience: 1st ESO E students.

Guests: Emili, Bernat, Paquita and Bernat’s students,

We would like to thank  Bernat’s students for acting as jury in our Christmas Carol contest and for their wise verdict.

We would also like to thank Diana, who gave us an extra hour to rehearse.
