2.es.6. La tesis de Nancy

La tesis de Nancy es una novela de Ramón J. Sender que cuenta cómo una estudiante norteamericana llamada Nancy viaja a España para preparar su tesis doctoral en Alcalá de Guadaira (Sevilla), sobre folklore gitano. Recorre monumentos y pueblos tomando notas y perfecciona su castellano, a pesar de lo mucho que le cuesta entender las expresiones coloquiales y los refranes, que muchas veces entiende equivocadamente porque los interpreta en su sentido literal y no figurado.

2.es.5. Figuras del lenguaje

Cuando aprendemos una lengua nueva, lo que más nos cuesta es entender a la gente que lo habla. Y es porque muchas veces usa palabras y expresiones con un significado distinto al que habíamos estudiado.
Esta diferencia entre el sentido real (objetivo, correcto, académico) y el sentido figurado (expresivo, coloquial, literario) se da también en el idioma que hablamos, sea castellano, catalán o cualquier otro.
A estas variaciones o formas particulares de emplear el lenguaje se les llama figuras.

Figuras del lenguaje son pues todas aquellas palabras y expresiones que tienen un sentido figurado.
Cuando decimos “estoy hecho polvo” o “hace un frío de mil demonios”, no queremos decir lo que realmente significa la frase, ¿no es cierto? Sin embargo, nos resulta de lo más normal. Esto se debe a que normalmente usamos estas figuras del lenguaje de forma inconsciente, sin darnos cuenta ni saberlo.
Imaginad un estudiante de español en Alemania o EEUU: ¿cómo entendería las frases “estoy hecho polvo” o “hace un frío de mil demonios”, si ningún castellanoparlante se la explica o traduce?

Y como estas hay muchas más.
Hemos explicado, comentado y analizado en clase algunas metáforas, así como palabras con valor connotativo, cariñoso o despectivo, añadido a su significado objetivo.

Recuerda:
Objetivo quiere decir contrastable, comprobable, neutro, evidente, común…
Subjetivo quiere decir opinable, personal, variable, individual, propio…
Las palabras tienen un significado objetivo (o denotativo) y a veces otro subjetivo (o connotativo)

2.en.15. February outing to La Caixa: Folklore, Griots, storytelling and Senegal. Homework

Folklore: The traditional beliefs, myths, tales, and practices of a people, transmitted orally.

Every culture has its own traditions and folklore. In fact, if we investigate the origin of the word folklore, we’ll learn that it is derived from folklore. This word revived folk in a modern sense of “of the common people, whose culture is handed down orally”.

In the first term, with Emili, in your Spanish lessons you talked about popular traditions and celebrations in Majorca. In Catalan lessons, Bernat has already told you some stories, Rondaies, which are part of the oral tradition of the Balearic islands, handed down from one generation to another.

This month, we’ll go on an outing to La Caixa to take part in a workshop about folklore in Senegal, and in March we’ll have the opportunity to learn more about music and traditions in another African country, Morocco.

In this first outing, we shall learn the importance of storytelling in Senegalese culture, and why the the GRIOTS, professional storytellers, play such a major role in the transmission of values and traditions.

In order to prepare this outing, we’ll do different activities connected with Senegal to find out information about its geography, population, religion and floklore.

In this video you’ll be able to listen to some traditional Senegalese music played by a Griot, to keep you going while you answer the questions.

  5. What is its population? Compare it with the population of Spain.

  10. What is/are the official languages?
  11. What is the main religion?
  12. What is Tiébou Dienn ?
  13. What is a boubou?
  14. Where is Dakar?
  15. What can you find in the island of Gorée?
  16. Who was Léopold Senghor?
  17. What’s the gross domestic product of Senegal? Compare it with the gross domestic product of Spain.
  18. Can you name a musical instrument from Senegal other than the Kora  you saw in in the video?
  19. Can you name any famous musician from Senegal?

Homework: Senegal web race

This time it is not a Paris Dakar race, but a web race to see how long it takes you to answer this set of questions. Deadline  will be next Friday. Rules: One person, one answer. Follow the order, and correct  mistakes if you discover any in previous answers. Part of the homework is copying the whole set of answers by Thursday, so we’ll be able to correct it together on Friday. Maybe you’ll surprise me and you’ll have finished  everything by Tuesday, let’s see. As usual, post your answers to the blog.
