2.en.25. Poetry for the weekend: Ogden Nash “Ode to the Llama”

Ogden Nash

was an American poet who liked playing with words, his poetry was humorous and not very difficult to understand. Now that you can recognize homophones and homographs, you might enjoy this little poem. It is called “Ode to the Llama”.

“Ode to the Llama”

The one-L lama,
He’s a priest.
The two-L llama,
He’s a beast.
And I would bet
A silk pajama
There isn’t any
Three-L lllama.
You did very well putting on stage Tomás de Iriarte Fable, but diction can still be improved. Practice learning by heart this little poem with good intonation. Let’s see who surprises me tomorrow during the  English lesson.
See you

2.en.24. Pronunciation: Homophones and jokes

In post 2.en.22 we looked at HOMOGRAPHS, now it is time to look at HOMOPHONES.

Words that are pronounced the same but are written differently . They are fun to learn and a good way to start playing  with words. Let’s see if you can make a good joke with some of the following.

maize /maze

mail/ male

beach /beech

none /nun

gorilla/guerilla

pea/ pee

cereal/serial

Look for the words you do not know and use images to help you remember them. It’s good to memorize words in pairs. Strange associations make it easier too.

I found this one for you it plays with two words Peace and Peas

Do you like playing with words?

Can you think of any other?

Can you make up a joke playing with words?

As usual, post your answers to the blog.

2.en.22. The Oscars are approaching! writing about films (3)

I’ve seen you acting up in a you tube video during your Spanish lessons with Emili and next Monday Bernat has invited me to see you acting the  sketches you have prepared about  language families in your Catalan lesson. We also gave it a try in English with “The love of the 3 oranges”, so who knows, maybe in the future you will be nominated for the  Oscars.

This term we have learnt a lot about films and about how to write a film review. The Oscars are approaching and we shouldn’t  forget what we learnt, so let’s get some practice.  Have a look at this model and do the exercise in your notebook.

Homework deadline:  It must be finished for Tuesday 16th.

Let’s get some practice as film reviewers before the Oscar ceremony! Go to the official Oscar site: http://oscar.go.com/ and look for information to write about the 2010 nominees as best leading actors or actresses.Write about movies following this model below:

Title of the film” is a (genre) starring (actor/actress). He/she plays a (character) brief explanation of his part.

Look at the example I have done for you

“Up in the air” is a drama starring George Clooney. He plays Ryan Bingham, a man who makes a living firing people.

Write  in your notebook 6 examples as the one above.

Who do you think will win?
