Lawol Mbignona yee

February outing to La Caixa: Folklore, Griots, storytelling and Senegal. Homework

Folklore: The traditional beliefs, myths, tales, and practices of a people, transmitted orally.

Every culture has its own traditions and folklore. In fact, if we investigate the origin of the word folklore, we’ll learn that it is derived from folklore. This word revived folk in a modern sense of “of the common people, whose culture is handed down orally”.

In the first term, with Emili, in your Spanish lessons you talked about popular traditions and celebrations in Majorca. In Catalan lessons, Bernat has already told you some stories, Rondaies, which are part of the oral tradition of the Balearic islands, handed down from one generation to another.

This month, we’ll go on an outing to La Caixa to take part in a workshop about folklore in Senegal, and in March we’ll have the opportunity to learn more about music and traditions in another African country, Morocco.

In this first outing, we shall learn the importance of storytelling in Senegalese culture, and why the the GRIOTS, professional storytellers, play such a major role in the transmission of values and traditions.

In order to prepare this outing, we’ll do different activities connected with Senegal to find out information about its geography, population, religion and floklore.

In this video you’ll be able to listen to some traditional Senegalese music played by a Griot, to keep you going while you answer the questions.

  1. How big is Africa? Find out the size in square km and compare it with the size of Europe.
  2. Where is Senegal?
  3. What are the bordering countries of Senegal?
  4. How big is it? Compare it with two other African countries and with Spain.
  5. What is its population? Compare it with the population of Spain.
  6. What is the climate like?
  7. What about its geography? Are there any high mountains?
  8. Can you name a tree which is associated with this country?
  9. When did Senegal become independent?
  10. What is/are the official languages?
  11. What is the main religion?
  12. What is Tiébou Dienn ?
  13. What is a boubou?
  14. Where is Dakar?
  15. What can you find in the island of Gorée?
  16. Who was Léopold Senghor?
  17. What’s the gross domestic product of Senegal? Compare it with the gross domestic product of Spain.
  18. Can you name a musical instrument from Senegal other than the Kora  you saw in in the video?
  19. Can you name any famous musician from Senegal?

Homework: Senegal web race

This time it is not a Paris Dakar race, but a web race to see how long it takes you to answer this set of questions. Deadline  will be next Friday. Rules: One person, one answer. Follow the order, and correct  mistakes if you discover any in previous answers. Part of the homework is copying the whole set of answers by Thursday, so we’ll be able to correct it together on Friday. Maybe you’ll surprise me and you’ll have finished  everything by Tuesday, let’s see. As usual, post your answers to the blog.

2.en.12. More great books, films and music coming to our blog! “Where the Wild things are” music: The Arcade Fire

“Where the Wild things are” is a children’s book with illustrations by Maurice Sendak. Did you read the book when you were a child? Now, the film version is on with great music by  Arcade Fire, an  indie rock Canadian band.

I loved the book and I like the band very much but I haven’t seen the movie yet. What about you?

Do you like the music? Have you seen the film?

Somethin’ filled up
my heart with nothin’,
someone told me not to cry.

But now that I’m older,
my heart’s colder,
and I can see that it’s a lie.

Children wake up,
hold your mistake up,
before they turn the summer into dust.

If the children don’t grow up,
our bodies get bigger but our hearts get torn up.
We’re just a million little gods causin’ rain storms turnin’ every good thing to
rust.

I guess we’ll just have to adjust.

With my lightnin’ bolts a glowin’
I can see where I am goin’ to be
when the reaper he reaches and touches my hand.

With my lightnin’ bolts a glowin’
I can see where I am goin’
With my lightnin’ bolts a glowin’
I can see where I am, go-go, where I am

You’d better look out below

2.en.9. Two versions of the song that gives the movie its name “stand by me”

The theme song of the film “Stand by me” was performed by Ben E. King and written by Ben E. King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. In the 60’s. According to Wikipedia, “Stand by Me” was ranked number 121 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 1999, BMI named it as the fourth most-performed song of the 20th century, with about 7 million performances.

Here follow 3 versions of the song. One is a cartoon animation, the other one is the result of an initiative to use music to connect people from all over the world, called “playing for a change”

Finally you might choose to sing along the original Ben E. King version as you read the lyrics

Timon and Pumba (animation)

“Playing For Change: Peace Through Music” street musicians from all over the world singing together

Stand By Me (lyrics) – Ben E. King

  1. What do you think about them?
  2. Which one do you like best?
  3. Do you understand the lyrics?
  4. What are the words you did not understand and had to look up in the dictionary?

Post your answers to the blog for Friday 22nd

Quin ritme

Your 12 days of Christmas versions and contest results

Most of your works were very nice. However, as it usually happens, 5 people did not  hand in their work and many did not meet the deadlines. Some students sent their draft so late that the teacher had to correct them late at night. Some people did not even copy the corrections the teacher did. There were also students who did not follow the instructions about size, type of paper and presentation requirements, and one who did not even write his/her name . Well, hopefully next time you’ll be more reliable.

Congratulations for those who did a great job!

Jury: Bernat, Laura, Rodrigo, Diana and  Cristian.

Homework:

Post your comments on the activity and on your classmates versions in the blog. We all learnt from each other, don’t we?

Molly’s favourite and Amy Winehouse’s version

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus
Underneath the mistletoe last night.
She didn’t see me creep
Down the stairs to have a peep;
She thought that I was tucked up
In my bedroom fast asleep.
Then, I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus
Underneath his beard so snowy white;
Oh, what a laugh it would have been
If Daddy had only seen
Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night
