Here follow some samples of your work and  some reflections on your presentations

Good points

  1. Most of you have learnt  to use Google Docs, an excellent tool for collaborative work
  2. Most of you have  learnt how important it is to collaborate and help each other in order to get a good final product and to be efficient
  3. Most of you  have learnt  to present your work   in three languages
  4. Most of you have learnt how important it is to have visual support to present a project to an audience
  5. Most of you have learnt the cost of   feeding  a family of 4 members for a day
  6. Most of you have learnt to compare quality and prices  of  restaurant menus
  7. Most of you have learnt  what a great variety of food is offered in a very small area of your city
  8. Most of you have learnt about local products and shops
  9. Most of you have learnt how to describe an urban area, gathering information through observation and research

Things to improve

  4. Some of you worked very little and left most responsibility to other members of the group

  6. Some of you did not follow the guidelines given in the dossier

  8. Some of you did not behave properly during the outing
  9. Some of you did not collect the necessary information
  10. Some of you did not rehearse the oral presentation
  11. Some of you did not include visual aids in the power point

3.en.13. Paella is famous all over the world, but so is 1st ESO E from the Ramon Llull

Dear students,

in one on the last posts (3.en.9), you could see a representation of the English department, Molly, Belma and Raúl, hands on preparing a delicious paella.

This delicious dish is famous all over the world, as fas north as Stockholm, but you are almost as famous. Check the video and tell me if you are able to hear the name of your class.

  1. Where is Stockholm?
  2. Can you think of any famous Swedish dish?
  3. Look at the queues, waiting to taste paella and check the spelling of this tricky word. Is QUEUE the only spelling admitted? Use the dictionary to find out the answer.
  4. What does the logo on the bags remind you of?

3.en.9.Recipe: paella directly from the hands of the English department

As part of the project on food and eating habits, each group will have to write a recipe. The English department teachers are experts  making  “paella” . Last Friday, you saw our world famous chef, Rául, directly from Alicante, cooking a huge paella, helped by Molly and Belma.  Molly is taking good notes  to be able to prepare one when she goes back to Portland.

You can also see a video with all the ingredients you need. If you have any doubts, ask  Raúl, Molly or Belma.

3.en.5. actors and actresses, food and poems: Andrea, Jilin and Daryl

Dear Students,

Yesterday your class mates, Andrea, Xilin, and Daryl did a great job. They acted as real professional actors in the Poetry Celebration that took place at El Gran Hotel. You remember the poetry workshop, don’t you?

On Monday we’ll go on an outing to El Olivar. The outing is part of our class project this term. FOOD AND EATING HABITS.

We hope you’ll learn a lot of new things, and we expect you’ll  find out information about food, shopping habits, local traditions and shops.

We’ve chosen a poem by Enric Casasses to link poetry and food.

2.en.26. Template for “Families around the world project”. Objectives of the project

By Friday the 5th of March, we shall have finished this project “FAMILIES AROUND THE WORLD”.

  • The aim of the project is to investigate on the similarities and differences of families from all over the world and to expand what we learnt about family life in Senegal and in the USA.
  • We shall revise how to locate a country in the map and learn a few relevant facts such as size, location, population, wealth, languages, religion and see whether these aspects have a reflection on family life.
  • We shall also learn how to describe a family in terms of  looks, age and clothes.
  • We shall learn some useful words and expressions to describe photos and people doing things.
  • We shall learn some new vocabulary related with jobs and with household chores.
  • We shall learn to compare different families  and use comparatives and adjectives to do so.
  • We shall learn to draw some conclusions from what we observed in the photos and what what we learnt about the countries.
  • We shall learn to work in group and to collaborate in order to make a “single” Power Point Presentation, using Google docs as a tool.
  • We shall use the Power Point to do an oral presentation and  improve oral presentation techniques.
  • We shall use this project as a starting point for our third term theme: “habits and diet“.
  • I have already sent you an invitation to share this Power Point through Google docs. You will be working in groups of three, each group will be responsible for three countries. There is a list of 30 countries and photographs you will be working with in the power point. I will tell you how to organize the groups.

    This is a copy of the initial document I sent to you. I will give you further instructions during our lessons.

    Some hints to improve your oral presentation skills

    Today we went to the Computer room to  use the projector and listen to your  power point presentations of  the city outing. Only two groups managed to meet the deadline and finish the work. I know that some people had technical problems and other people were ill but next time you must organize your groups more effectively.Two groups did the presentation today, it was a good job but there are some things that can be improved. We learn from errors, don’t we?  here follow some hints:

    Regarding the slides:

    • Check spelling. If you work in groups, a person can type and the others check that there are no spelling mistakes. The questions were in the dossier, so there is no excuse for making so many errors.
    • Follow the instructions. If the instructions say ” write a caption” , the task is not completed if you do not write a caption.
    • Do not copy things you do not understand.

    Regarding the oral presentation:

    1. Introduce the topic and the group  to the audience.
    2. Keep eye contact
    3. A power point is a visual help to make what you want to say clearer to the audience, use it as a visual aid not as a book.
    4. A power point is not something you just “read”. Do not read all the time. There is no point in presenting a power point to an audience if you only read what is written in the slides.
    5. Be natural
    6. Make spontaneous comments. (it was a nice day! Look at that, Can you see…?, please, can we see the next slide?)
    7. Ask questions to the audience. ( do you understand? shall I repeat? is it clear? or any other questions that make your presentation more interactive)
    8. Practice pronunciation
    9. Use body language and point with your hands, cursor or pointer to the area or aspect of the slide you are commenting
    10. The way you present the information is as important as the slides
    11. You work in group, so every member must collaborate and pay attention to what is going on.
    12. Thank the audience for their attention and ask for questions or suggestions

    The groups that have not done the presentation yet have an advantage. They can practice. Have these 12 points  in front of you and rehearse the presentation. Check that you follow the instructions.

    Congratulations to the people who did it first and good luck  to the rest of you.


    POST 74  HOMEWORK: copy the hints for a good oral presentation in your notebook and keep these hints in mind while doing the presentation. Practice with your group before Friday.

    You must answer the questions of this  power point  (slide share presentation) for Tuesday. Write the number of the slide and the answers. There’s no need to copy the question.

    Congratulations for behaving so well last Friday! I see from your comments that you had a good time and learnt a lot of things, I did so too.  Hopefully tomorrow we’ll have a good time too.

    Do not forget the dossier, the snack and something to drink.

    FITXA DE LA FAÇANA MARÍTIMA.

    1) Alguns edificis emblemàtics de la façana marítima s’han fet servir durant segles per a la mateixa funció, com la catedral. Comenta els canvis d’ús que han sofert alguns altres, com el castell de Bellver, els molins del Jonquet, es Baluard, Consolat de Mar, sa Llotja o l’Almudaina.
    2) Compara l’alçada de la Seu amb qualsevol altre edifici de Palma.
    3) Per què creus que el castell de Bellver està damunt un pujol? De què li servia tenir la planta de forma circular?
    4) Quines banderes hi ha en el Consolat de Mar?.
    5) La Seu i sa Llotja són del mateix estil arquitectònic. Intenta trobar-hi qualque element que tenguin en comú.
    6) Averigua com es diu l’estil arquitectònic de la catedral i sa Llotja i el castell de Bellver.
    7) Indica quin d’aquests edificis té el nom d’origen àrab.
    8) Per què creus que l’Auditòrium té el nom llatinitzat?
    9) Dóna la teva opinió sobre els edificis del segle XX.
    10) A quins d’aquests edificis hi has entrat qualque vegada?
    11) Què creus que hi hauríem de construir actualment per a millorar la façana marítima?
    12) Copia la inscripció que hi ha en català a l’estàtua dedicada a Ramon Llull. En quines altres llengües hi ha frases escrites a la peanya?
    13) A quin d’aquests edificis tenim més possibilitats de trobar-hi el president Francesc Antich? Per què?
    14) Per què creus que a la façana marítima no hi ha cap edifici d’estil modernista? (Recorda que el modernisme era l’estil del Gran Hotel que vàrem visitar a principi de curs)

    Algunes d’aquestes preguntes ja les podríeu contestar ara mateix, però altres heu d’esperar a veure bé els edificis. Aquesta fitxa la emplenarem el dia que anem a fer la volta per una petita part de la façana marítima. Caldrà estar atents a les explicacions.

    Recordau que hi trobarem moltes més coses que també seran interessants. A continuació en posarem uns exemples.
    -Les murades.
    -El parc de la Mar.
    -Escultures.
    -S’Hort del rei.
    -Porta vella del moll.
    -Arc de la drassana musulmana.

    I recordau, que la nostra ciutat té una de les més belles façanes marítimes d’Europa, o del món. Bon viatge!
