2010/11. 1.en.1.welcome to your class blog

Dear students.

My name is María Loredo, you already know that, and this year I will be your English teacher and also your tutor. On top of that, I will be with Diana, your Science teacher one hour a week, which means that we are going to spend a lot of time together. I hope we’ll have a great time and that you’ll learn many things and also have fun.

Your language teachers, Emili, Bernat, and myself, will be working together on the same topic, preparing outings and collaborating on creating materials and activities for your group. Virtudes, the German teacher,  and Inés, the French teacher  will also join us in some occasions. After all, we are all language teachers, so it is only natural that we teach you the same things.

The first topic this year that will keep us working for a while is our city, Palma. We shall work on different aspects: signs, buildings, transport, shops, museums and problems that affect city life.  There will also be some outings that will be as important as our class work.

Apart from cities, this first term we shall be working on names. Names are like our presentation card. There’s a lot in a name, and we hope you’ll have fun playing with names a bit.

Finally, it is also important in these first weeks to learn how to present  homework, how to take notes and how to organize the information you get during lessons.  We’ll use some of the posts that we made for the former students of 1ESO E and some examples from their work. Maybe we’ll ask them to come to our class to explain to you how to do it.

This last week I was away working at the university entrance examination, PAU, so you had no English and had to read a book in English and write a summary. This week we’ll check what you did and we shall start with the topic of cities one week from now.

That is all for now, I will not make this post any longer. Welcome again and good luck in this new school year!

Maria

3.en.20 News from Menorca

Dear students,

As promised, I’ve sent you some pictures from Menorca. Now, two questions for you,  let’s see if you can guess where the photos  were taken . Would you say the pics are from  Maó or from  Ciutadella?  Is the beach in the northern coast of the island or in the southern part?

I’ll give you a hint, for those of you who never visited Menorca, the very beautiful house “Can Saura” appears in the photos. Another hint, the coming celebration of San Joan takes place in this city.

As far as the beach… one of your classmates, the one who sits next to  Lukas in the back row, shares the name with this beautiful, unspoiled beach…

Who will be the first one to post the answers to the blog?

I’ll try to send you more pictures tomorrow.

I will also contribute to the final party next Monday with some delicious Menorcan cheese. You are doing pretty well with the organisation arrangements.

Behave! Maybe next year we’ll be able to organize a trip to Menorca  with the whole class. What do you think?

3.en.19. On line materials for revision. Grammar, readings, listening and pronunciation practice.

Next week we’ll have an exam on some grammar contents. You are familiar with an excellent website, Agenda Web, and you have also used the Ramon Llull school website.

Now, I will recommend to you the exercises from the  first 10 units of Natural English, from Oxford University Press (elementary level)

http://www.oup.com/elt/global/products/naturalenglish/elem/

You can do 3 of the sections: Grammar, Textbuilder and Phrasebank. I shall explain to you in class how to do it, but this post will help you identify the page and find the link, in case you get lost.

1 Grammar

2 Textbuilder

3.Phrasebank

The phrase bank section comes with sound, which will help you improve pronunciation and your listening skills. the Textbuilder will improve your reading skills. You can copy the texts in your notebook. The grammar section you can do it on line.

Homework: start with the grammar, and cover a unit every day.  Those of you who have difficulties in English can do do the other sections as revision work during the summer.

If you try any of the sections and/or exercises of this site, I would appreciate your feedback. Post your comments to the blog.

Don’t tell me you do not know where to go to study! No excuses.

See you tomorrow.

3.en.18. Armin’s lesson

Yesterday, Armin, a second year Batxillerat student, visited our class and was your teacher for a day. He talked to you in English about his experience as a student at the Ramon Llull. He  talked about IT and Moodle, the Virtual Classroom you will be using next year. He also told you how school should be a bully free environment.  We would like to thank him for spending two hours with us and for being patient and putting up with some noise and lack of attention. However, most of you acted really well, payed attention and asked interesting questions.

  1. What  did you learn from his visit?
  2. What did you think of his English? Did you understand him?
  3. Can you remember any of the questions some students asked him?
  4. What about his answers?
  5. Was there anything that surprised you?
  6. Did you learn anything?
  7. Did you find it interesting?

Post your comments to the blog.

3.en. 17. Take a stand against bullies, Take the pledge, Take action

Today we’ll have a very special guest in our class, Armin Quintana. He arrived at the Ramon Llull 6 years ago and was a student of 1st ESO of the European Section, just as you are now. This year he finished his senior year (2nd Batxillerat)with excellent grades  and he will leave our school to go to the university. He is a great student and a great person too. His English is excellent and he was classified in 3rd position in the Fonix competition. He will tell you about his experience at the Ramon Llull. You can ask him questions and he will also give you some advice on how to take a stand against bullies.

Today’s post is dedicated to bullying. Most of you have heard what bullying is, some of you might have been victims of bullies, but also might have been bullies some other times.  Let’s reflect on what a bully is and take action to make our school a……

bully free environment.

What is a bully?

How many forms of bullying can you think of?

Have you ever been bullied?

Have you ever been a bully yourself?

Watch these two videos and explain the kind of bullying that takes place.

1

2

Match the visuals with the different types of bullying

a) physical bullying: being hit, tripped, kicked, pinched etc

b) verbal bullying: being called names, teased, put down etc

c) psychological bullying: being threatened, stalked, gestures etc

d) social bullying: being ignored, having rumours spread about you, excluding someone etc

e) sexual bullying: unwanted touching or brushing against someone, picking on someone because of their sexual orientation etc

e) cyber bullying: insulting someone in chat rooms, sending cruel or threatening emails/text messages; using the web, chat rooms or mobile phones to spread rumours or information about someone etc

These are some of the ways people feel when they are bullied

scared asustado espantat 1
sad triste trist 2
helpless impotente impotent 3
unsafe en peligro en perill 4
ashamed, embarrassed avergonzado avergonyit 5
alone solo sol 6
angry enfadado enfadat 7
weak débil feble 8
nervous nervioso nerviós 9
sick enfermo malalt 10
not confident inseguro insegur 11
not wanting to go to school con rechazo a ir a clase amb rebuig a anar a classe 12
like I deserved it como si me lo mereciera com si m’ho mereixés 13
like no one cares como si a nadie le importara com si a ningú li importés 14

Have you ever felt like this?

When I was bullied I ( always, sometimes, never) felt………

Are there any other feelings you can think of?

There are many videos against bullying in You Tube because bullying is a world wide problem. I have chosen three that I liked, but I’m sure you can find others.

I like the slogan of this simple animation.

There are also excellent websites that try to develop awareness  and make students take as stand against bullying. I have chosen tow websites from Australia, they are great. Investigate a bit, let’s see what you find.

We got excellent tips on how to fight bullies in an Austalian website. Some of the visuals that illustrate this post are from this web page too. http://www.bullyingnoway.com.au/chillout/bullying.shtml

and http://www.headroom.net.au/Content.aspx?p=167

Bullying has to do with not accepting that people are different.

What do you think?

3.en.16. Molly’s last week at the Ramon Llull.

Molly, our great assistant teacher is leaving  but we shall not forget her. Last week  students prepared great surprise parties for her. Here follow some samples of what happened inside the classes.

4th ESO B students brought excellent food, decorated the class, prepared a fill in the gaps exercise for her and recorded a video to wish her goodbye.

1st ESO E students decorated the class with balloons, made flags with Molly’s photo, put up a big poster on the wall and projected a great power point presentation telling her how much they had enjoyed her lessons and her company on Fridays.

Here follow some photos showing the class decoration and the power point the students prepared for her

HOMEWORK:

Listen to the video recorded by 4th year ESO students. let’s see if you can understand what they say. Every student from 1st ESO E has to contribute. Do not repeat sentences. In order to post your comments you must read the  previous comments made by your classmates. Post  your answers to the blog.
