The streets of Palma through the eyes of a tourist (2): Listening exercise question race

Basic RGB

Here follows another video by the same tourist. This time I am not going to ask you any questions. You will be the one to watch the video and prepare the questions for your classmates.

1. Watch the video and think of a good question. Of course, the answer must be in the video. Questions do not need to be very difficult.

2. Post the question to the blog.

3. The person who knows the answer posts the answer and a new question.  You keep on doing it until everyone in the class has posted a question.

4. Every student  must make a question and an answer, except the first student who  will only post the first question and student number 30 who will only post the last answer.

5. Remember to number the questions.

Hurry up! the sooner you do it, the easier.

The streets of Palma through the eyes of a tourist (1): Listening exercise

320_16241

Last May,   a British tourist walked along the streets of Palma filming parts of the city and making a few comments. It is not a professional video, but it gives you a good idea of what our city is like seen through the eyes of a tourist.

We are going to stroll  along the same streets, so let’s get some listening practice beforehand.

Watch this video and answer the questions in your notebook. As usual , the first one to find the answers must post them to the blog. Remember to write the number of the question you are answering to make it easier for your class mates.

1. She walks along a street called San Feliu, can you find it in the map?

2. What is her opinion on the courtyards? What are the adjectives she uses to describe them?

3. She passes a hairdresser. What is the name of the hairdresser?

4. Is it a modern one or an old one?

5. Are there lots of business in the streets?

6. What are the streets like? What is the adjective she uses to describe the streets?

7. She passes a place where French is taught. What is the name of the place?

8. She talks about the domination of the island by different people. Tick the ones she mentions:

Fenitians         Vandals          Romans           Arabs  Any other

9. She passes a pastry and bread shop. What is the name of the shop?

10. What can you buy in the bread shop packaged in gift boxes?

11. Which church does she find at the end of the street? Do you recognise it?

12. What does she say about prizes in Majorca?

13. What does she say about prices in restaurants?

14. How much does she say some restaurants charge you for a simple salad?

15. What does she say about prices in supermarkets?

16.Why does she recommend renting an apartment?

17. What does she say about prices of guided tours organised by the municipality of Palma?

18. Does she plan to go on one of those city tours?

19. How big are the apartments that are being advertised?

20. What is real state? What do they sell?

21. Does she talk about  the history of Mallorca?

22. Did you find the video very difficult?

23. Did you learn any new words?

23. Do you think she likes the city?

A new debate for 1eso E city explorers: girls take over traffic lights

After the fight, red men were tired3774517.

Girls, decided they did not want any more fights in the streets and started their traffic light take over.

Here follows some evidence.

♦Where did girls start their revolt?

What are the cities with girls on traffic lights?

Are you for or against girls icons in traffic lights?

the answer is not Santander….. you’ll have to search the world wide web to solve the enigma.

City life explorers project (1): Old shops and business hunt

collage10On Friday you will go with Bernat for a short walk in the city to learn more about its history. In English we are going to investigate other aspects such as shops and small business.

Shops and small business  tell us a lot about city life and people’s habits. The Beatles are a good starting point to investigate our city, why not?Let’s start with barber shops, as the one that appears in Penny Lane. Look at the images of Penny Lane and  of the Barber cutting the little boy’s hair.

What do these images look like? Tick the appropiate adjective:

  • modern
  • busy
  • old fashioned
  • quiet
  • backward
  • fast
  • sophisticated
  • high-tech

In the next two weeks  you will be  city explorers and your task will be to discover old business and shops and to investigate if life and habits have changed a lot.

FIRST TASK:  explore hairdressers and barber shops:

Are there any old barber shops left in Palma?

What are their logos?

How are they called?

Do women go nowadays to barber shops to have their hair cut?

Do all men go to unisex hairdressers?

What about you? Where do you go to have your hair cut?

What about your parents?

Do you go to a modern hairdresser salon or to an old-fashioned  one?

SECOND TASK:
There are other shops and business other than barbers. Think and keep your eyes open wehen you walk in town.  You can ask your parents and grandparents for help, they might know what to look for. You have 2 weeks, until the 26th of October to search the town.

1. Take photos of your findings

2. Mark in a map the place where the business is situated

3. Write a fact file with information:

Type of business
Name
Age
What does it look like?
Why do people go there?
Interesting features

If possible, interview the owner or one of the people working  there. You can also look for information in the net or in the library.

4. Look for a modern version of the business and compare it to the old one

We’ll give you more instructions on how to present and organise your work, but you can start thinking about it and, above all, keep your eyes wide open when you walk around! Look at this picture. Anything can happen if you are on alert and look at things with different eyes.

City music from Liverpool: road, street, avenue, boulevard, alley, lane, Penny Lane.

Welcome Paquita!

It’s great to have you with us, you bring music to our blog. You reminded us of  a another pedestrian crossing in Abbey Road;  The Beatles made it famous all overthe world. The Beatles were from Liverpool and they wrote many songs about their life as young people in their hometown. This term we are working with cities, that is one of the reasons why we know a lot about cycle lanes and pedestrian crossings.  Now we’ll follow the Beatles into a small street in Liverpool, a lane, a narrow passage between houses, called Penny LaneHere follows the lyrics, but some words are missing. Look at the images, they might help you find the correct words to fill the gaps. Some words are repeated:

ears, laugh, barber, fireman, poppies, hello, queen, pouring rain, skies, pies
